and Scholarship Activities of Graduate
Studies Section at Faculty of Engineering
Alexandria University during March – April 2009
1- On Wednesday, 11 March 2009, a representative team of King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals has visited the Faculty of Engineering at Alexandria University and met with the Dean and Vice-Dean for Graduate Studies & Research before delivering a seminar to both final-year graduating batch of undergraduate and graduate students. The members of the representative team are:
a) Dr. Salam A. Zummo Dean of Graduate Studies
b) Dr. Esmail M. A. Mokheimer Associate Professor (ME)
c) Mr. Attia Esmail Ph.D. Student(ME)
The head of the representative team Dr. Salam Zummo delivers a lecture about "Graduate Programs & Research Funding at KFUPM in front of about 200 Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Science undergraduate and graduate students. He explained that KFUPM offers scholarships for outstanding prospective Master and Doctoral students in the disciplines of engineering and science He encouraged interested graduate students to apply at:

After his speech, there is an open discussion between members of KFUPM team and students about many interesting points for both sides. The delegates explained the Scholarship Benefits which are:
- Free tuition
- A monthly stipend
- Free furnished air-conditioned bachelor housing
- Housing for married Ph D Students (or allowance as available)
- Medical care
- Free textbooks
- Subsidized meals in the university cafeteria
- Participation in research with the faculty in funded projects
- Conference attendance support for paper presentations
- A prepaid air passage for initial travel to Dammam at the start of contract, and a return ticket after the completion of the degree
- Other benefits according to the university policy
The Deanship of Graduate Studies at KFUPM offers degrees in 9 Doctoral and 28 Master programs in 21 disciplines in Engineering, Sciences, Business, Administration, Accounting, Management Information Systems, and City & Regional Planning Program.
At the end of the seminar delivered by the KFUPM representative team and the open discussion between them and both final-year undergraduate and graduate students of both Alexandria University Engineering and Science Faculties, 50 interested students filled their application for graduate study at KFUPM and handed to KFUPM representative team for evaluation.
2- On Saturday March 21, 2009, the Director of Research and Development at Reckitt Benckiser South Africa (Pty) Ltd, for Middle East and Africa Mr. Mattia de Domincis and R & D Chemist Ms. Eirhiesh Abonado paid a visit to Faculty of Engineering – Alexandria University for recruiting possible scholars of final year undergraduate students to work at their manufacturing plant in city of Port Saeed.
On their first day of visit, the delegate team of Reckitt Benckiser attends a seminar held by six groups of final year undergraduate students in the main lecture hall of Preparatory Building, in which they present their final year graduating projects and they have been as follows:
- From Mechanical Engineering Department:
- Project entitled "Hydraulic Robotic System" &
- Project entitled "Design of Cold Stores"
- From Production Engineering Department:
- Project entitled "Reverse Engineering"
- From Chemical Engineering Department:
- Project entitled "Production of Sulfur Coated Urea"
- From Electrical Engineering Department:
- Project entitled "Software-Defined Radio for Future Mobil Communication Systems "&
- Project entitled "VLST Design and Application"
On the second day; Sunday March 22, 2009, the Director of R&D of Reckitt Benckiser Mr. Mattia de Dominicis gave a presentation about Reckitt Benckiser programme that has been designed to take Engineering students Graduates and develop them as Business Leaders of the future. His speech was entitled "Find out Why Reckitt Benckiser is a great place to work ". Mr. Mattia explained the aim of Reckitt Benckiser graduate program which are:
- Fast track tailored programme for high potential leaders of the future.
- Supports our aim to grow tomorrow's top Research and Development management from within.
- Provides a continuous stream of talent.
- Provides a structure yet flexible framework for development that puts participants in the spotlight from day one.
He concluded his presentation by stating that he is interested in interviewing the same group of students who presented their graduating projects for possible hiring as R&D Assistant which represents Reckitt Benckiser graduate scheme entry level.
After interviewing Engineering undergraduate students, Mr. Mattia announced that the selected students will be informed electronically by E-mail and he promised to come back to Faculty of Engineering next month of May, 2009 to attend college Job Fair
3 – On Monday March 30, 2009, Mrs. Omnia Shaker; Officer of Alexandria Francophone Digital Campus – Francophone Universities' Agency (AUF), in collaboration with Alexandria University organized open day at Faculty of Engineering in the main Lecture Hall of Preparatory Building celebrating the International Day of Francophone. She gave a speech to attendees entitled "Francophone Scholarships and E-Learning ".
At 2:00 pm: Mrs. Shaker gave a brief about Francophone Universities' Agency (AUF) located at Senghor University in Alexandria.
At 3:00 pm: Mrs. Shaker talked to attendees whoever; student, teacher, or a person working in specific field and looking for advancing his career or even a graduate wishing to complete his Higher Graduate Studies without leaving his country.
She presented the scholarship programs offered by Francophone Universities' Agency (AUF) that can help interested person in achieving University degree through E-Learning ( whatever it is an African, European or Canadian Certificate ).

4 – On Wednesday and Thursday April 1st, 2nd, 2009, The Egypt Japan University of Science and Technology arranged a seminar inside Faculty of Engineering. The seminar entitled “Energy and Environmental Engineering”. The seminar has been attended by Faculty members and graduate students of Mechanical Production and Chemical Engineering students. The first day was opened by a welcome speech by Prof. Ahmed Khairy – EJUST Manager, followed by illustration by Head of Mechanical Engineering Department and Staff about current department research. Afterwards, the Visiting Japanese Professors of Tokyo Institute of Technology gave lectures about the following:
- “Mechanistic Photo-Claisen Rearrangement Reaction” by Prof. Teijiro ICHIMURA.
- “Recent Progress on photoreactions in Micro Reactors” by Prof. Massaaki SUZUKI.
- “Creativity developing education” by Prof. Chitoshi MIKI.
The seminar has been concluded by noon of Thursday April 2nd, 2009 and an open discussion between Visiting Japanese Professors and Alexandria University Engineering graduate students about possible registration for higher studies at Egypt Japan University of Science and Technology in its temporary location at Borg El-Arab city. |
